A Sense of Community and Privacy
The Summit at University City is a student housing community located within Drexel University in Philadelphia, USA. This premiere student residence blends principles of large scale living with an intimate neighbourhood vibe.
Sixthriver Architects have created spaces to promote a sense of community and privacy within this student living village. The lobby boasts a large collage of vintage record albums which creates a dynamic and textured feature wall. Reclaimed wood, raw steel and vintage graphic patterns within the interior finishes is combined with a colour palette inspired by the neighbouring community, providing a warm backdrop to support resident life.
The Changing Nature of Student Life
“The way a student lives, studies and interacts is ever changing. This student residence allows for a variety of opportunities for private reflective time or lively social encounters. Large multipurpose lounge spaces offer generous overstuffed sofas for relaxation, reminiscent of those one may find in a cozy neighbourhood coffee shop. The theatre opens up to the lounge with the use of sliding barn doors, allowing the space to function for larger resident gatherings.” Sixthriver Architects have revealed.
Located on the mezzanine, a fitness centre is encapsulated in glass and allows views down into the recreation/amenity and academic success centre, which encourages interaction and connectivity among residents. The academic success centre provides spaces of ample flexibility for the individual student as well as larger groups, including areas for both lounge and task driven studying. The design team have incorporated private and semi-private study niches, with specific furniture selections being made to reinforce these various areas of study moods.
Working with Shaw Contract
According to Sixthriver Architects, the flooring selections throughout the ground level lobby, academic and recreational spaces help reinforce the moods of activity, rest, connection, and community.
“The recreation spaces are the epicentre to social activity and interaction. The Hexagon patterned carpet tile and inserts of saturated colour pops help to create an active playing field with notions of connectivity and a hive network. Due to the considerable demands of student life, commercial grade carpet was essential at the resident units. The selected Shaw Contract carpet provides a backdrop of warmth and lofty texture desired for a dwelling, while being robust enough for extensive use”.
Congratulations Sixthriver Architects for your winning project in the 2017 Shaw Contract Design Awards!
